Focus on Sealing Technology. Key topics include technologies, materials, and applications, as well as design, testing methods, and service life.
Sealing technology in hydraulic and pneumatic systems encompasses all components designed to control the exchange of pressurized and ambient media. Its primary function is to reliably prevent the leakage of hydraulic fluids while simultaneously protecting the system against the ingress of dirt, moisture, and other contaminants.
In both applications, seals function as dynamic sealing systems, as they must seal moving components such as pistons and rods under pressure. A key factor in this process is the sealing gap: it allows the necessary movement while simultaneously requiring reliable and long-lasting sealing performance.
Hydraulic seals are subjected to particularly high stresses. They must function reliably even under high pressures, temperatures, sliding speeds, and mechanical shear forces. Key requirements include:
High thermal and
chemical resistance
Low friction to prevent stick-slip effects
High resistance to wear and abrasion
Protection against dirt, moisture,
and dragging force
Cost-effective solutions for
installation space, assembly, and maintenance
Reliable operation even
in the presence of air bubble cavitation
Pneumatics have similar requirements, though they are generally less demanding. The main focus here is on:
Air Tightness
Lubricating Film Retention
Low friction
Abrasion-resistant
The interaction of various sealing elements:
Rod Seals
prevent hydraulic fluid from leaking out
Piston Seals
They separate the pressure chambers within the cylinder and enable the motion function
Guide Rings
absorb lateral forces and prevent metal-to-metal contact between moving parts
Scrapers
protect the system from the ingress of dirt, chips, and moisture
Only the precise interaction of these components ensures that hydraulic cylinders can safely build up pressure and move.
The design of sealing is always application-specific. Among other factors, the following are crucial:
Pressure and Temperature Conditions
Type of print medium
Speed and Type of Movement
Surface Quality of the Sliding Partners
Dimensional Tolerances and Seal Gap Geometry
The shape, profile, and material of a sealing system are therefore always tailored to the specific application.
Careful design and the use of high-quality sealing systems are crucial for the service life and reliability of hydraulic systems. Even minor malfunctions or leaks can result in significant follow-up costs that far exceed the material cost of the seal.
For this reason, close collaboration between users and sealing specialists is a key factor in achieving optimal solutions in hydraulic engineering.
We assist you in selecting suitable sealing systems and provide technically sophisticated solutions for demanding applications in hydraulics and pneumatics.
Back-up rings are primarily used as anti-extrusion rings in combination with O-rings. They reliably prevent the elastomer from extruding into the sealing gap, thereby increasing the operational reliability of sealing systems, especially at high pressures.
What sets STEM back-up rings apart is the material used and its special thermal post-treatment. Our endless back-up rings are manufactured from high-quality, virgin PTFE and then subjected to a specially developed heat treatment process. This specifically influences the material’s elongation and recovery properties.
Quick and easy installation without recalibration; preventing installation damage and shearing
Made of thermally post-treated PTFE, which returns to its original shape immediately after being stretched
Designed for installation in one-piece housings; the continuous design ensures maximum protection against gap extrusion
High operational reliability even in demanding applications
No need to use slotted or spiral back-up rings
The result is a pronounced memory effect: After being mechanically stretched, for example during an installation over a shaft or piston rod, the support ring automatically returns to its original shape. As a result, the ring seats itself in its intended position immediately after installation.
Unlike conventional PTFE back-up rings, no additional calibration or shape correction is required. This significantly simplifies installation and reduces both installation time and the risk of damage.
Precision and consistent quality are essential requirements for high-performance components in hydraulic engineering. To meet these high standards, we rely on the state-of-the-art Keyence IM-X1000 digital measurement system as part of our quality assurance process.
The optical measurement system enables fast, highly precise, and fully documented inspection of components with a wide variety of geometries. By automatically capturing relevant dimensions, measurement errors are minimized and consistently high measurement accuracy is ensured.
The system offers significant advantages, particularly for components related to hydraulics, where even the smallest dimensional deviations can affect performance and service life. Thanks to noncontact measurement, both individual parts and mass-produced components can be inspected efficiently and reliably.
Fast and precise measurement of complex part geometries & efficient incoming goods, in-process, and final inspections
Automatic measurement analysis in just a few seconds, digital documentation, and complete traceability, as well as a reduction in measurement and operator influence
Non-contact testing without damaging sensitive surfaces
First-Article Inspection Reports / Acceptance Tests
High repeatability and reproducible measurement results
